WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A Texas man accused in a fatal shooting at a worker camp in the western North Dakota oil patch has been formally charged with murder, attempted murder and terrorizing.

A friend of the Texas man who died in the weekend shooting said he is a local legend in the Houston racing scene.

Victor Lamont, 24, of Lufkin, Texas, is accused of killing Gerald Schild, 57, of Katy, Texas, and injuring Travis Lomax, 38, of Fort Smith, Ark., who was treated at a Minot hospital and released. Authorities said the shooting happened late Saturday at the crew camp near Tioga.

All three men were working for Wisconsin-based pipeline company Michels Corp., which has said the shooting happened when the men were off work. Lamont also is accused of threatening two other company workers with a gun, Williams County Chief Deputy Verlan Kvande told The Forum newspaper. Authorities have not released details of the incident or a possible motive.

Court documents do not list an attorney for Lamont.

John Mandabach, whose family owns the Houston Motorsports Park racetrack, told the Williston Herald that Schild — who competed in a handful of NASCAR races in the 1970s — has won many races at the local track. The track will dedicate the Aug. 18 races to Schild and hold a moment of silence in his memory.

"I'd be surprised at anyone at our racetrack who doesn't know who Jerry was and wouldn't be able to share some humorous story," Mandabach said. "He's just a real memorable guy that had a positive impact on anyone he was around."

Oil resumes upward march, hits 3-month high

Tuesday, 21 August 2012 19:57

NEW YORK (AP) — The price of oil resumed climbing Tuesday, reaching its highest point since early May.

Speculation that the U.S. Federal Reserve might take action to spark the sluggish recovery and hopes for good news from upcoming debt-crisis meetings in Europe were the catalysts.

Benchmark crude finished up 71 cents at $96.68 per barrel in New York. Earlier, it crossed $97 for the first time since May 11. It lost 4 cents Monday after rising for four straight days.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, rose 94 cents to $114.64 per barrel in London.

Both contracts pared gains slightly Tuesday afternoon, around the same time that U.S. stock indexes slipped into negative territory.

Traders awaited the Wednesday release of minutes from the previous Fed policy meeting for signs that it might lower interest rates. Lower rates tend to drive oil prices because they steer investors away from less-risky investments.

There was also hope for positive developments in meetings between the leaders of Germany, France and Greece later this week over the European debt crisis.

"Optimism for a breakthrough in dealing with Greece is propelling the risk appetite," said Addison Armstrong, senior director of market research for Tradition Energy.

Prices at the pump fell from a day earlier, but are still at records for the date. The national average on Tuesday was $3.717 per gallon (98 cents a liter), above the previous Aug. 21 high of $3.702 in 2008.

Retail gasoline prices have gone up about 39 cents per gallon, or 12 percent, since hitting a low of $3.326 on July 2, according to AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service.

Other futures prices on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

— Wholesale gasoline increased 3.44 cents to $3.0652 a gallon.

— Heating oil rose 3.12 cents to $3.1243 a gallon.

— Natural gas was flat at $2.775 per 1,000 cubic feet.
