DALLAS (AP) — The father of an American journalist working in volatile regions of Syria said his son hasn't been in contact with his editors or his family in Texas in more than a week, but he's hopeful his son will turn up safe. Austin Tice, a former Marine, has reported for The Washington Post, McClatchy Newspapers and other media outlets from the Middle Eastern country, where he recently spent time with rebel fighters. He was expected back in the U.S. in mid-August. "It's not uncommon for various journalists moving in and about Syria to be out of communication. We're…

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A former auto mechanic who shot and killed three of his former housemates while they were sleeping 14 years ago was hoping Tuesday to delay his execution for a third time. John Balentine, 43, is scheduled to die by injection Wednesday evening. Ballentine, who had a long criminal record in his native Arkansas before he killed the three Texas teens in January 1998, avoided lethal injection in September 2009 when a federal appeals court gave him a reprieve a day before his scheduled trip to the Texas death chamber. Then in June 2011, he was within…

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Rick Perry has written to state agencies calling a new Obama administration immigration policy "a slap in the face to the rule of law." In a letter sent Monday, Perry said the White House's "Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals" program doesn't change Texas policies. Last week, young illegal immigrants around the state and nation formed long lines to begin applying for work permits under the policy. It defers deportations for that group if they meet certain criteria, including arrival in the United States before they turned 16 and no convictions for certain crimes. Perry…
