Austin man gets 50 years for baby daughter's death

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Central Texas man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for the beating and shaking death of his infant daughter. A judge in Austin on Wednesday sentenced 23-year-old Nathan Hogan. Hogan pleaded guilty to murder in the 2011 death of his 7-week-old daughter, Serenity, in a plea agreement. The Austin man was originally charged with capital murder in the attack that investigators say happened when the baby would not stop crying. EL PASO, Texas (AP) — An El Paso man convicted of killing his girlfriend's 19-month-old child has received an execution date. Rigoberto Avila Jr. faces lethal injection Dec. 12 in Huntsville for the February 2000 beating death of Nicolas Macias. Testimony showed the child was one of two he was babysitting in February 2000 while the children's mother was attending a college class. WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A Texas man accused in a fatal shooting at a worker camp in the western North Dakota oil patch has been formally charged with murder, attempted murder and terrorizing. Police shooting in Abilene leaves armed man dead

ABILENE, Texas (AP) — Police in West Texas have shot and killed a gunman who allegedly slipped into his estranged wife's home by removing an air conditioner. Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge says the man died at a hospital following Wednesday morning's shooting. The wife wasn't hurt. The woman called 911 to say her estranged spouse was in her bedroom. Police say the man apparently removed a window air conditioning unit to get inside and threatened to kill her. He then allegedly walked to the backyard. Girl, 16, wounded by shots fired into Dallas house

DALLAS (AP) — Dallas police say a 16-year-old girl who was in her room has been shot after someone outside her home opened fire on the residence. Police say five other people suffered minor injuries from flying glass during the incident early Wednesday. Investigators say no one has been arrested. HOUSTON (AP) — Houston police have shot and killed a man who allegedly fired into his estranged wife's office then tried to enter the building.
