The Waller High School UIL Academic team and the Speech and Debate team both experienced success in their first meets of 2013, bringing home several individual honors. The Magnolia Debate Team grabbed second place overall, during a recent tournament at Ranger College. In Oratory, Blake Bergeron placed first, Amanda Sass second, Blake Hale third, Emily Ward sixth and Juliana Nicolini seventh. In Dramatic Interpretation, Juliana Nicolini placed first, while Blake Bergeron placed fifth. In Humorous Interpretation, Bergeron grabbed third place, Hardy Gatlin fifth and Nicolini sixth. In Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking, Miranda Sanford took home fifth and Gatlin placed sixth, while in Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking Nicolini placed second and Hale placed fourth. Meagan Wilson and Kirk Smith placed third in two-person cross examination debate, while Deanna Nelson advanced to the quarterfinal round in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
Magnolia High School's Ben Hudson (left) and Jacquline Mears(right) took part in a national discussion on gun control, moderated by Hari Sreenivasan of the PBS show Newshour. They are two of eight students selected nationally to take part in the discussion. The report is expected to air on PBS sometime next week.
