The City of Magnolia and the Magnolia Community Foundation will be hosting Mardi Gras on the Stroll, Feb. 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. The event will include live music, a Cajun Cook-off and an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Record for number of participants in a dancing umbrella parade. Magnolia High School Food Science student Stephanie Simpson (left) and Culinary Arts student Cynthia Luke (right) designed and constructed a cake for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Tomball Magnolia Montgomery Metro Go Texan Committee. The cake was auctioned off at the committee’s annual Denim & Diamonds dance held recently at the Tomball VFW. Their cake sold for $300 and the total raised from all the cakes donated was $1350.

Magnolia Rotary honors youth at luncheon

Salem Lutheran School's Chesshir win spelling bee

Lauren Chesshir was named the 2013 Spelling Bee Champion at Salem Lutheran School. Chessir, a third grader spelled the word caricature to win the contest. Field Store Elementary student wins spelling bee

Fields Store Elementary School held their annual Spelling Bee recently, which was won by fifth grader Alyssa Sustaita. After 21 grueling rounds, Sustaita won by spelling the word congratulations. The runner up was third grade student Makenzi Chance. The Spelling Bee is coordinated and judged by librarian Alicia Werst. Pictured are (from left) Alicia Werst, Makenzi Chance and Spelling Bee winner, Alyssa Sustaita. Alyssa will advance to the Region V Spelling Bee in Bellville, this spring.

Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Mike Sullivan is reminding residents that the deadline for property tax payments is rapidly approaching.Payments for 2012 property taxes are due by Jan. 31. A seven percent penalty and interest charge will be assessed beginning Feb. 1 on all unpaid 2012 tax bills. Taxpayers that are unable to make their entire payment on time can avoid paying full penalties by making a partial payment by the January 31st deadline," Sullivan said. Magnolia debate team grabs another trophy

The Magnolia Debate Team grabbed second place overall, during a recent tournament at Ranger College. In Oratory, Blake Bergeron placed first, Amanda Sass second, Blake Hale third, Emily Ward sixth and Juliana Nicolini seventh. In Dramatic Interpretation, Juliana Nicolini placed first, while Blake Bergeron placed fifth. In Humorous Interpretation, Bergeron grabbed third place, Hardy Gatlin fifth and Nicolini sixth. In Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking, Miranda Sanford took home fifth and Gatlin placed sixth, while in Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking Nicolini placed second and Hale placed fourth.
