Dear Editor,Please allow me to give the counter to Professor Kyle Scott's view on stopping gun control. We all have to hear the "Wild West" appeal that if we are all armed with guns we'll be safe. If the deranged person isn't armed with a gun, he'll just use a knife, as we have seen at Lone Star College. And yet, most knifes are legally carried most anywhere, just as the perpetrator of the stabbings did. But there was no one stopping him with their "legitimate" knife. Fourteen people were injured, not killed and I bet he could have shot…

My father would have celebrated his 59th birthday Feb. 7. I have been trying to think of a way to honor him in these pages, to a group of readers that didn't know him at all. How do I explain a man that still means everything to his family, even though he has been gone for nearly a decade? Then it occurred to me. I could have been Adam Lanza, had it not been for my father. I don't write that for shock value, nor do I write that to draw attention. I write that because it is true. You…

Woman pauses to remember former Tomball Mayor

Written by Tuesday, 22 January 2013 17:05
Dear Editor, It is with great sadness that I write this tribute to one of Tomball's sons, William Thomas (Bill) Webb. I first met Councilman Bill Webb in 2009, at a city council meeting. Without knowing the political climate in Tomball, I quickly understood that Bill was a no-nonsense conservative with a quick mind, a dry wit and a deep love for his birthplace, Tomball. It was obvious that this deep love had transformed into a strong devotion to the many people who supported him in his quest to serve the citizens of his beloved Tomball as Mayor, Mayor Pro-tem…

Just a few days ago we celebrated Halloween. It's one of my wife Penny's favorite holidays. She works for weeks to help ensure that-like magic-our driveway and front yard are transformed into a haunted house equipped with tombstones, spider webs, spooky music, and enough zombies, witches, goblins and vampires to frighten even the most hardened adult, but Penny does all of this wok for the children. She delights in seeing the joy her efforts brings to the children of our neighborhood. Children who themselves have transformed themselves to an assortment of super heroes, ghosts, pirates and princesses so that they…

Tomball a gift to Texas Senator

Written by Tuesday, 30 October 2012 16:08
Let me tell you a story. It began 33 years ago this month, when I moved to Houston. I was hired as the sports director of channel 11 in Oct. 1979. One of my first assignments was a Friday night Tomball High School game. Back in 1979 it took a long time to get to Tomball from downtown. I had no idea where Tomball was and thought I'd never get there and back in time for the 10 p.m. sportscast. I thought I was in the middle of nowhere and would probably never go back again. Little did I know…

Presidential debate was a one-sided affair

Written by Monday, 08 October 2012 17:31
When the nation looks back on the 2012 Presidential election, the first Presidential debate at the University of Denver in Colorado might be a moment where we all look back and say collectively -- 'This was the moment where the tides turned.' President Obama and challenger Mitt Romney faced off for the first time in the general election, where the President had to defend his record against a challenger promising to be an agent of change. With PBS's Jim Leher holding down the fort, Romney and Obama went toe to toe on issues concerning the economy, taxes, entitlement spending, and the…

Dear Editor, I would like to take this opportunity to gratefully acknowledge Mr. Cecil Bell, Jr. and his contributions to Magnolia ISD. Cecil Bell has served for the past 8 years as a Trustee for the MISD school board. Prior to that he was a founding member of the Magnolia Education Foundation and worked diligently to provide additional resources and funds which helped teachers work creatively in their classrooms. Thank you Cecil for improving the quality of education in Magnolia ISD. I wish to personally thank Mr. Bell for his service as Board President. During the past few years, Cecil…

President’s snide remarks come back to bite

Written by Monday, 24 September 2012 15:20
It was nearly a year ago when President Barack Obama snidely suggested that his foreign policy was superior to other viewpoints, by answering “ask Osama bin Laden and the 22 out of 30 top al Qaeda leaders who have been taken off the field whether I engage in appeasement” during a press conference. Ahh yes. The playground answer. Fine. I’ll go with that. Mr. President, you should ask Ambassador Chris Stevens whether your foreign policy decisions are correct. Ask our soldiers, marines, airmen and sailors -- since they have had to mourn twice as many deaths in Afghanistan since you…

LETTER: Judge's sentence wrong in 2003 murder

Written by Monday, 24 September 2012 15:16
Dear Editor,I thought it was terrible to read the article about the Sanchez man brutally killing a Tomball woman, Sandra Williams, and only being sentenced to 10 years by Judge Susan Brown. No matter whether this guy was an illegal immigrant or not, this is an injustice to the family of this woman. I do not know whether Judge Brown is a Democrat or Republican, but she will not get my vote next go round.Tom CrofootTomball

When hijacked jetliners flew into the World Trade Center and Pentagon, and plummeted into a pasture in Pennsylvania 11 years ago, it exposed our Intelligence Community’s failure to use its imagination and connect the dots in determining threats to the United States. Today, I am concerned about how much progress we have made.As an example, this Friday I will chair a Homeland Security oversight hearing on the failure to share information and connect the dots before the 2009 terrorist attack at Fort Hood. Both the Army and the FBI were aware of Major Hasan’s opposition to the war in Afghanistan.…
