Written by Monday, 22 October 2012 16:06
In a season of heartbreaking finishes and close losses, it just figured that the fifth annual Magnolia Bowl would be decided by the slimmest of margins. Despite an amazing fourth quarter comeback by the Magnolia Bulldogs, the Magnolia West Mustangs (4-3, 3-2 in District 18-4A) held on for a 21-20 win Oct. 12. The cross-town rivals were locked in a 7-7 tie until midway through the final stanza, when the fireworks began for the large crowd at MHS Stadium. "What do you expect from a rivalry game," said West Coach Shawn Bell. "Both sides did a great job." The Mustangs…

Down 22-0 after the first half, the Bulldogs (1-3, 0-2 in 18-4A) fought back within seven early in the fourth quarter before Huntsville (3-2, 2-1) sealed the deal with about six minutes left in the game. The visitors opened the second half with a 60-yard drive to the Dogs’ 12-yard-line when, on first down, Hornets’ junior quarterback Malik Brown fumbled to the 1-yard-line and Magnolia recovered. Four plays later, the locals found paydirt…

Tough week one for area football teams

Written by Monday, 17 September 2012 18:34
Area teams struggled during week one of the high school football season, as Magnolia, Magnolia West, Tomball, Tomball Memorial and Tomball Concordia Lutheran all posted losses. Magnolia 7 Bryan 19 Football coaches always say that turnovers kill a football team. The old cliché rang true for the Magnolia Bulldogs Sept. 7, as two of them proved to be key momentum turners in the game. While Magnolia’s defense let the Bryan quarterback throw the ball all over --- to the tune of more than 300 yards --- they buckled down in the red zone for the most part, holding the high…

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Ryan Cook was playing against the Dallas Cowboys in the preseason finale only a couple of weeks ago. Now Cook is a center of attention for the Cowboys, preparing to start in the middle of a restructured offensive front in the second game of the season this Sunday at Seattle. He was already snapping to Tony Romo and making line calls only two series into the season opener. "He's really proven that he can learn things quickly," coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday. "He did a really good job in the Giants game. We hope he just…

HOUSTON (AP) — Andre Johnson is not a talker. So when Houston's star receiver stood up and addressed his team on the importance of this season in their meeting Saturday night, the Texans took notice. And on Sunday with Johnson's words fresh in their minds, Houston took advantage of four turnovers to get a 30-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins in rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill's NFL debut. Of course, Houston's most veteran player contributed more than just his motivational speech, finishing with 119 yards receiving and a touchdown for his 39th career 100-yard game. Arian Foster added two scores to…
