Cougars and Wildcats prepare for upcoming season

Written by Tuesday, 04 September 2012 16:07
One is adjusting to a new system under a new coach, while the other is preparing for it’s first ever varsity football season. However, both the Tomball Memorial Wildcats and Tomball Cougars are readying themselves for a move to District 22-4A. The Tribune talked to both schools head coaches about the upcoming season and what fans can expect from both teams. Tomball Cougars Tomball High School welcomed Danny Ramsey as its new head coach earlier this year. Ramsey replaced Tommy Kaiser, who retired. Ramsey comes to Tomball from Waco High, where he led them to the 4A playoffs the past…

STARKVILLE, Miss. - It was a remarkable debut weekend in collegiate volleyball, as Mississippi State’s libero position has helped Roxanne McVey earn Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honors. McVey, a former Tomball Lady Cougar standout, took the early SEC league for digs with 88 scoops during three matches in the Maroon Classic. McVey tallied 21 digs in her first collegiate match, added 25 in Saturday’s win over ULM and concluded the weekend in the Newell-Grissom Building with a school-record 42 digs in the tourney championship match against Kennesaw State. She bettered the previous school record of 39 digs set…

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Yu Darvish finally feels like he's just pitching for the Texas Rangers. Forget the outside pressure of trying to impress everybody else. The big right-hander is starting to look again like the star on the mound he was in Japan before coming to the major leagues this season. "He was trying to impress a ton of people," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "And I think right now, the only thing he's concerned about is impressing Yu Darvish. And once he does that, he impresses everyone else." Darvish struck out 10 over seven innings for the AL…

HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros have dropped their last three games by a total of four runs. That doesn't make the mounting losses any easier to take, though. Their latest close defeat came Tuesday night when pinch-hitter Hector Sanchez delivered a go-ahead single in the ninth inning and the San Francisco Giants rallied for a 3-2 victory. "Eventually, it is going to turn," Astros interim manager Tony DeFrancesco said. "We have a lot of confidence in the guys in there. The effort is there. I am watching guys go hard every day. It's sort of frustrating to the manager…

Arkansas and Texas A&M have agreed to play their Southwest Classic series at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, from 2014 through 2024. The game is being played at campus sites this year and in 2013 after three years in the Dallas suburb. The new agreement, announced Wednesday, amends the existing contract through 2018. The Razorbacks have won all three previous Southwest Classics. The two teams are now SEC rivals. Copyright 2012 The Associated Press.

PHOENIX (AP) — College football is in for some big and, some say, much-needed changes with the switch to a four-team playoff. Before we get to that, there's still a couple more seasons under the current system; the playoffs don't begin until 2014. And this one will be worth watching. There's plenty of interesting story lines, from Penn State trying to rebuild in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal to Urban Meyer's return to coaching with Ohio State. There's no shortage of great players, either. Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley skipped the NFL for the chance at…

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — David Ash never doubted he would be the starting quarterback at No. 15 Texas. Now that he has won the job, the challenge is keeping it beyond Saturday's season-opener against Wyoming. Ash, who rotated last season with Case McCoy, won the preseason battle to take over the job without an "or" between their names on the depth chart. Coach Mack Brown announced the decision last week and Ash met with reporters Monday. "I expected it," Ash said. "I worked really hard. The coaches have given me a shot. That's all you can really ask for." Ash…

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Times are changing in the Big 12. A new commissioner, two new schools and a batch of new starting quarterbacks bring a distinctly different flavor to the conference this season after a period of turmoil when one-third of the original members left. Big East champion West Virginia and Mountain West champ TCU will at least partially fill the void left by Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri and Texas A&M scattering to other leagues. Exactly who will take over the superstar roles filled by Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III and fellow first-round NFL draft picks Justin Blackmon, Ryan…

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Adrian Beltre extended his hot seven-game streak into another week. Beltre was 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs, including driving in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning, to lead the Texas Rangers to a 6-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. Elvis Andrus scored on Beltre's single to give the AL West leaders a series-opening win. Nelson Cruz also homered and Mike Olt added an RBI for Texas. Derek Holland (9-6) got the win, giving up five runs — three earned — on six hits…
