The Chambers of Magnolia Legislative Alliance, a combined effort of the Magnolia Area Chamber of Commerce and the Magnolia Parkway Chamber of Commerce, held a luncheon Sept. 20, where members learned about Obamacare’s effects on small businesses. Speaking to the group were Kelly Shea, a human resources and employee relations specialist and Gina Clark, a Magnolia certified public accountant. Members were shocked by some of the things they heard. Many of the regulations apply to businesses with more than 50 employees, such as the $2,000 penalty for not offering insurance to employees, which Shea said could have some consequences. ‘This…

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Thousands of students, professors and workers were evacuated from Louisiana State University's main campus Monday following a bomb threat, school officials said. The evacuation was prompted by a threat phoned into 911 about 10:32 a.m., university spokeswoman Kristine Calongne said. Calongne said the caller didn't direct the threat to any specific area of the campus. The university issued a statement on its website announcing the evacuation an hour later, then distributed the information through text messages, emails and social media. Written by Monday, 17 September 2012 18:45
MAGNOLIA - The Magnolia City Council continued with its extraterrestrial jurisdiction (ETJ) expansion eastward, along FM 1488, at the Sept. 11 meeting. In Texas, the ETJ of a municipality includes specified unincorporated area that is adjacent to the city limits. Property owners can request to be part of the ETJ. In the future, the City of Magnolia may choose to extend city limits and city services into the ETJ areas. Unincorporated areas may be subject to annexation by a nearby city, which could be either Conroe or Magnolia. Currently, Magnolia has extended its ETJ areas five miles east of the…

A year ago, the Magnolia 4B Economic Development Corporation assumed the debt service for moving the utility lines along FM 1774 between Friendship Drive and 10th Street. This act removed the debt from the City of Magnolia, which would have been forced to raise property taxes in order to pay it. The debt was a result of a $2 million loan from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Special Infrastructure Fund used by the city to move the utility lines, which was necessary due to the widening of FM 1774 within the city limits. Just last week, the 4B Corporation…
