Police: Buffalo man tried to eat bogus $50 bills

DARIEN, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 35-year-old man tried to swallow several counterfeit $50 bills after he was caught trying to use the bogus money at a western New York amusement park. The Genesee (JEN'-uh-see) County Sheriff's Office says deputies were called to Darien Lake Theme Park and Resort on Sunday night after Larry Jones, of Buffalo, bought french fries with a $50 bill. Deputies say a park employee determined the bill was counterfeit and called security. While being taken away, deputies say Jones stuffed five counterfeit bills into his mouth and tried to eat them. Stocks fall on weak construction, factory reports

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are falling on Wall Street following reports that construction spending and manufacturing have weakened in the U.S. The Dow Jones industrial average was down 100 points at 12,991 at midday Tuesday. The broader S&P 500 index fell eight points to 1,398 and the Nasdaq composite fell 20 points to 3,047. The U.S. stock market was closed Monday for Labor Day. Industrial and materials stocks fell the most. Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar was the weakest stock in the Dow average, slipping 3 percent, or $2.58, to $82.75. JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — A prosecutor has asked jurors to use "common sense" and to convict former suburban Chicago police officer Drew Peterson of killing his third wife. Prosecutor Chris Koch (KOHK') said during closing arguments in Peterson's trial Tuesday that a common sense examination of evidence shows Peterson killed Kathleen Savio in 2004 and that she didn't die accidentally by falling in her bathtub. Peterson is charged with first-degree murder in Savio's death and is considered a suspect but hasn't been charged in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson. Jackson estate, businessman settle copyright case

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Jackson's estate and a businessman working with the singer's mother have settled a copyright infringement case for $2.5 million. The settlement was announced Tuesday in a Los Angeles federal courthouse right before a trial on damages was scheduled to begin. The estate had sued Howard Mann and his businesses in January 2011, claiming he had violated Jackson copyrights in a book and other merchandise he sold in collaboration with Katherine Jackson.
