Strong winds, tornadoes possible today

Tuesday, 29 January 2013 18:23

DALLAS (AP) — Significant parts of Texas are at risk of strong winds and storms, with possibly some small tornadoes forming.

Bill Bunting of the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center says much of the state on Tuesday will see strong winds and possibly some hail. Areas around Dallas, Austin, Houston, Abilene and Wichita Falls could all be affected by severe weather that is expected to move eastward throughout the day.

The far northeast part of the state is at the greatest risk of damage.

Storms are most likely Tuesday afternoon and into the early evening.

Bunting says residents should take the opportunity to review their severe weather plans as spring approaches.

AP: 1 in custody in Houston shootings

Tuesday, 22 January 2013 19:41

WASHINGTON (AP) — A law enforcement official says Texas authorities have at least one person in custody in connection to the Lone Star College campus shooting in Houston, and local authorities think there could potentially be a second shooter.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss an ongoing case. The official says multiple injuries have been reported.

The Houston-area community college is on lockdown amid reports of a shooter on campus. Lone Star College System issued an alert on its website telling students and faculty to take immediate shelter or avoid the campus.

Texas AG urges NY gun-lovers to move to Texas

Wednesday, 16 January 2013 21:53

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas attorney general has launched an Internet ad campaign inviting New Yorkers who feel their state's new gun laws are too restrictive to move to Texas.

Anyone accessing a variety of media sites from Manhattan or Albany starting Wednesday may be confronted with two pop-up ads.

One reads, "Is Gov. Cuomo looking to take your guns?" Another says, "Wanted: Law abiding New York gun owners looking for lower taxes and greater opportunity."

Paid for with Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott's campaign funds, the ads reference the nation's toughest gun control law. It was signed Tuesday by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The ads link to a Facebook site proclaiming, "Keep your guns, move to Texas."

The site says Texas has no income tax and created more than 275,000 jobs in 12 months.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Chris Brown is scheduled to return to a Los Angeles courtroom for the first time in more than a year amid questions about his community service.

The R&B singer is on probation for the 2009 beating of his then-girlfriend Rihanna and had been ordered to perform six months' worth of community service, including graffiti removal, roadside cleanup and other manual labor.

Brown has completed his terms with praise from a judge, however a prosecutor raised concerns about how many hours he had completed.

The singer has received praise from a judge overseeing his probation for the 2009 beating of Rihanna, but an audit of his community service was ordered in July.

Brown was also ordered to appear in court for a review of his probation on Monday.

Amanda Bynes gets traffic citation, car towed

Monday, 17 September 2012 16:38

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — Amanda Bynes had another run-in with the law when she was pulled over for driving on a suspended license by a Southern California airport.

Burbank's Bob Hope Airport spokesman Victor Gill says airport police cited the actress and impounded her car Sunday.

He said in a statement that "police did cite Amanda Bynes for driving a vehicle with a suspended drivers license this morning."

Bynes' driving privileges had been suspended after she was charged with hit-and-run in connection with two traffic crashes.

Los Angeles prosecutors accused Bynes of leaving the scene of two accidents, one on April 10 and another on Aug. 4, without providing proper information. The first incident occurred just days after Bynes was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. She has pleaded not guilty in that case.

She also drew attention for her tweet to President Barack Obama asking him to fire the police officer that arrested her.

The 26-year-old is best known for her role in the WB's "What I Like About You" and the film "Easy A."
