| Magnolia Mayor’s son arrested for third time |
|
City of Magnolia Mayor Jimmy Thornton’s son was arrested for the third time in a year and a half.
Corey Thornton, 20, was arrested by Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies at his home in Magnolia on a felony criminal mischief warrant April 7. He was released later that day after posting $1,500 bail. The warrant stems from an incident in February of 2009 involving Corey Thornton’s ex-girlfriend. The younger Thornton said he was completely unaware he had a warrant out and would have cooperated earlier if he had known. “This is something that happened a year ago, we never received phone calls for it or anything in the mail,” said Thornton’s mother, Debbie. “He’s been doing so good, I hate that this happened.” A felony criminal mischief charge is applied when property damage intentionally caused is more than $1,500 but less than $20,000. State jail felonies are punishable by up to 180 days to two years in state jail and fines reaching $10,000. According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, a criminal report filed such as criminal mischief is forwarded to the District Attorney’s office where charges are then filed and the defendant is notified by mail of their court date. If the defendant does not appear at the court date, a warrant is issued for their arrest. According to Thornton, the incident on Feb. 22 stemmed from “jealousy” over an ex-girlfriend. “I called her phone and someone else answered,” Thornton said. “I got mad and went over to her house.” Thornton said his friend drove him to the girl’s house where he said he got out of the car “and tried to fight” the young man whom she was with. After the young man began to drive away with Thornton’s ex-girlfriend, Thornton said he was holding a baseball bat outside his car window and as they drove by, the bat broke a rearview mirror off of her car. Thornton said it was “not on purpose.” After that, Thornton said he and his friend followed the two to the young man’s house, where the man’s brother was waiting with a 12-gauge shotgun pointed at him. At that point, Thornton said he and his friend left and never heard anything else about the incident. Thornton was previously arrested on Sept. 14, 2008 when he was among a group of three other suspects who were arrested for burglarizing a convenience store on Nichols Sawmill Road. Then on March 31, 2009, Thornton was arrested a second time near Magnolia West High School and charged with possession of marijuana in a Drug Free Zone and unlawful carrying of a weapon, both Class A Misdemeanors. He pled guilty to the possession charge, which was downgraded to a drug paraphernalia charge, a Class C Misdemeanor. The weapon charge was dismissed. Thornton’s mother said he is “moving on with everything” since his previous arrests. “Unfortunately, decisions you make when you are young keep coming up,” she said. Thornton said he has cooperated with authorities and will attend a court date regarding the warrant on April 30.

Corey Thornton is said to be employed by the same company that his father, Mayor Jimmy Thornton is the General Manager - Apex Emergency Services. Wonder if since his father is the Boss and Mayor, if he was required to pa*s a Drug Screen and Background check?

Doesn't surprise me at all considering who his father is...just another cheesy politician lacking any moral compa*s or character. Apple never falls far from the tree you know? Too bad big pappa can't do anything to stop this, children learn by example, and from what I can tell, Corey has done quite well for himself considering his family background. I wonder just how far daddy will have to go to bail his kid out this time? Perhaps if he spent more time focusing on his family and building strong character inside that group than being the "playa" he thinks he is this kind of stuff wouldn't be happening. Is daddy gonna be able to keep giving this kid a job after he goes to jail? How long til Jimmy is out of the mayor's seat? Well that's too long. Is he really qualified to be a judge? Come on now....
