City to celebrate Memorial Tree dedication in latest Depot project

memorial trees The Tomball Depot Plaza will see its latest addition this weekend in the city’s ongoing effort to beautify the downtown area.

On April 24 at 10:30 a.m., the City of Tomball will host a dedication ceremony for 20 oak trees that will be planted as part of a memorial tree program the city has implemented.

The trees will be planted sometime this week, according to Mayor Gretchen Fagan, in a grassy area near Market Street just west of the Historic Depot. Each tree was purchased by a member of the Tomball community and dedicated to a loved one or to someone who has had a lasting impact on the city.

Among those who are being honored with memorial trees are Tomball ISD educators Peter McStravick and Ed Monzingo.

Fagan said that the trees are being provided by Spring Nursery and Landscape and will be planted along with a plaque memorializing a community member.

The Tomball City Council approved the program last year, but plans for additional trees have been put on hold in order for a study to be conducted to assure the plan aligns with the city’s long-term development plan, Fagan explained.

The memorial trees are the latest project the City has undertaken to re-develop the depot area. Following the restoration of the train depot four years ago, the City has used money generated primarily by the Hotel Occupancy Tax fund to create a unique community center.

Two bronze statues, one of city founder Thomas Ball and another of a train conductor, were sculpted by artist Sandra Van Zandt and placed at the depot. A large gazebo was donated to the city in 2009 by the Tomball Centennial Commission to mark Tomball’s 100th birthday. Future plans include a water play area and community bathrooms at the plaza.

The Depot Plaza is the site of the City’s Second Saturday at the Depot and has been the center focus of events such as the annual Tomball German Heritage Festival.
