Benefit planned for Society of Samaritans founder Everett

A benefit fundraiser has been planned for Society of Samaritans (S.O.S.) founder and director Judy Everett to help with medical costs for her recent hospitalization.

As of last week, Everett remained hospitalized at Tomball Regional Medical Center with congenital heart failure, pneumonia and severe anemia. Everett went on medical leave from S.O.S. about two months ago, said her daughter-in-law Crystal.

Before she got sick, Judy was there (at S.O.S.) every day,” Crystal said. “She was always the last one to leave. She didn’t leave until the last person there needed help. How she was when she first started is how she is now with the organization.”

Everett first started helping the community more than 20 years ago, when she would hand out clothes from her front porch. She founded S.O.S. in 1986 after talking with church leaders in the area and bringing them on board to be linked with the organization.

According to the group’s website, S.O.S. is a coalition of churches and service organizations that work together to help meet basic needs of the community. It is a nonprofit, 501 c3 organization that is dependent on resources and operating funds from donations from churches, the community, benefits and grants.

S.O.S. helps needy families with food, bills, food stamp assistance, finding shelter and medical assistance, Crystal said.

“It’s like the mom of the community; if you need help, you go to your mom,” Crystal said. “If you’ve ever shown up at S.O.S., you’ve never left empty-handed.”

The group is a fixture in the community, with many other organizations and entities supporting it, including the Magnolia Rotary Club, City of Magnolia and Magnolia ISD.

“Volunteers and board members have come and gone, but Judy has been the rock of S.O.S.,” Crystal said.

The benefit is scheduled for Sunday, June 6 at Spurs Country Western Dance Hall on FM 1488 in Magnolia.

Barbecue brisket sandwiches will be served and a silent and live auction will take place.
