| Driver announces plans to leave Tomball council |
|
A little more than one month after the Tomball City Council election, more change to the board could be on the way. At a June 7 meeting, longtime councilman Warren Driver announced his intentions to resign from the city council upon the expected sale of his home. Driver said his Tomball home is currently on the market and, should it sell as expected, he and his wife, Jean, will move to Canton, Texas. The Tomball city charter states that all council members must reside within the city limits. Driver said he plans to tender his resignation from the council following the June 21 meeting, which is the next scheduled regular meeting of the city council. City Secretary Doris Speer explained that a special election is required by city law to fill the potential vacancy. Speer said the election must be held within 120 days of a resignation. The spot could not be filled, she added, by appointment by council since Driver has held the position for more than two years. Driver was initially elected to the city council in 2004 and has won re-election twice. He is serving his sixth year on council. Prior to that, he served as the City Manager for Tomball from 1992 to 2002. “I love Tomball,” he said. “It’s been really good to me and I’m really conflicted over this.” But Driver explained that he and his wife will be moving into a more manageable home and more than two hours closer to four of their five children. “I’ve never lived in a place where I belong more,” he said. “This is a bitter sweet time for me.” Should Driver leave the council as planned, it will end his career of 42 years of municipal service.
