| Special election planned after Driver resigns from council |
|
Dodson, Wilson first to join race
In a move that was expected for two weeks, Tomball city councilman Warren Driver submitted his resignation from the council June 21, creating a vacancy on the board that will be filled with an Aug. 14 special election. The council unanimously accepted Driver’s resignation, with good-natured reluctance, near the end of the meeting and promptly honored the longtime public servant with a plaque for his time, on council and as former City Manager. Prior to serving six years as a city councilman, Driver was employed as Tomball’s City Manager from 1992 to 2002, a term he jokingly referred to being surprised he made it six months. Driver was first elected in 2004. “To be elected three times is just an honor beyond belief,” he said following his resignation. Driver resigned from the council after his decision to move out of the City of Tomball to Canton, Texas in order to be closer to his kids. All city council members must reside with the city limits of Tomball. Immediately following his resignation, a date of Aug. 14 was set by council to hold a special election to fill Driver’s seat, which is set to expire in May 2011. According to City Secretary Doris Speer, whoever wins the special election must also run for the seat in May 2011. As of press time last week, two candidates had already submitted their applications for a spot on the ballot: Preston Dodson and Judith Wilson. Wilson is fresh off a run against Gretchen Fagan for the city’s mayoral position, which she lost to the incumbent, while Dodson is running for political office for the first time. The deadline to file an application for a place on the ballot is July 6. July 12 is the last day for a write-in candidate to declare candidacy. Early voting runs from Aug. 2 to Aug. 10. Polling will be held at City Hall, located at 401 Market Street. For more election information, visit tomballtx.com.
