|
A man suspected in two early morning robberies June 29 was shot by a Montgomery police officer following a chase. The suspect allegedly robbed an Exxon gas station on FM 1774 in downtown Magnolia around 2:30 a.m. before later robbing the M&M grocery store off FM 1486 around 8:30 a.m. June 29, according to Magnolia Police Chief Domingo Ibarra. According to Ibarra, the suspect stole a donation jar full of money from the Exxon station before fleeing the scene. “Right now it’s under investigation whether it is the same suspect,” Ibarra said. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) authorities responded to a burglary call at 8:30 a.m. at the M&M grocery store. Deputies learned that a white male had robbed the store and fled in a silver passenger car towards Dobbin. Authorities with the MCSO Pct. 5, Magnolia Police Department and Montgomery Police Department responded after a MCSO dispatch issued an attempt to locate the suspect. Montgomery PD officers were able to catch up to the suspect and attempted to stop him in the area of Ben Smith Road and FM 1486, but he did not cooperate and fled on foot. A struggle then ensued between Montgomery PD Sgt. Bobby Bodden and the suspect and Bodden was attacked by the suspect as he tried to detain him. According to a press release from the City of Montgomery, during the struggle, the suspect attempted to take Bodden’s “duty weapon.” Bodden was able to maintain control of his weapon and then fired at the suspect, hitting him twice in the abdominal area. The suspect, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was taken to Conroe Regional Hospital. The officer was also taken to Conroe Regional in fair condition where he was treated for injuries to his head and face. He was released the same day and is “resting at home,” said Montgomery City Administrator Laura Smith. Charges against the suspect in the investigation are pending. The shooting is being investigated by the Texas Rangers, along with the MCSO Major Crimes Unit, MCSO Crime Scene Units and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
