MISD preliminary TAKS scores put district in Recognized category for first time

Preliminary results from Magnolia ISD TAKS testing from 2009 could put the district in the “Recognized” category for the first time in the school district’s history.

Superintendent Todd Stephens presented the results at a recent Board of Trustees meeting.

“Based on preliminary scores, we will be a recognized district for the first time,” Stephens said. “We’re extremely proud of that.”

Stephens said 460 districts out of 1,050 in Texas received a recognized label this year from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), according to the early results.

“We think that’s quite a distinction,” he said.

He cited “great teachers and administrators” as reasons for the honor.

According to preliminary accountability results, of the district’s 14 schools, seven were named exemplary, the highest rating the TEA gives. Just three years ago in 2007, only one campus was given an exemplary rating.

Across the board, MISD averages met or surpassed state averages for TAKS scores in elementary and junior high school.

In elementary math, the district’s eight elementary campuses averaged 3, 6 and 7 percent higher than the state average score in third, fourth and fifth grades, respectively.

In fifth grade science, the district’s average outscored the state by 6 percent, while sixth grade reading and math beat out the state average by 3 and 7 percent, respectively.

Seventh and eight grade reading both averaged 3 percent higher than the state average while eight grade science outscored the state average by 9 percent.

At the high school level, MISD averaged below the state average on only two subjects – ninth grade math, which averaged 2 percent lower and 11th grade social studies, which averaged one percent lower.

All other results were at or above state averages, including reading, which was 1 and 2 percent higher for grades 9-11.

In tenth grade science, MISD averaged 6 percent higher than the state average.

Administrators expect final TAKS results to be published later this month.
