Ike doesn’t stop inaugural Magnolia Music Fest

Watson Six months and one hurricane after its original date, the show that is the inaugural Magnolia Music Festival will finally go on.

Originally scheduled for September 2008, the festival was scrapped after Hurricane Ike blew through the Gulf Coast. But organizers of the event announced shortly after that it would be rescheduled for this year and confirmed the top acts would still appear.

Indeed, the likes of Johnny Lee, Jarrod Birmingham, Johnny Rodriguez and Aaron Watson will take the stage along with several others March 20 through 22.

“This is going to be a really big event for the city,” Magnolia City Administrator Ryan Kelley said. “There will be plenty of things to do for everyone.”

Music will include performances by bands playing country, blues, rock, zydeco and tejano.

The festival will be held at its original site, on the grounds of the Magnolia Ridge development, and will feature two stages for live music, games and a kids play area.

In addition, a barbecue cook off contest will be held March 21, along with a mud volleyball, horseshoe and washer tournament. Other entertainment will include a bike rally, Strong Man competition, dunking booth and face painting.

Kelley said that at current estimates the city is expecting close to 6,000 people will attend the festival over the course of the weekend.

“We encourage everyone from the surrounding communities to join us,” Kelley said. “This is going to be a festival for everyone.”

Ticket prices for the event are $15 for adults, $10 for children under 12 and are free for children under 3. Parking at the event costs $2.
