New mascot up and kicking at Magnolia West

Three months after vandals destroyed Magnolia West High School’s (MWHS) Mustang mascot statue, a new one has taken its place.

The original statue, which was made of a mixture of fiberglass and plaster, had only been up a month when it was destroyed, Precinct 5 Constable David Hill previously said.

The body of the mustang was ripped off its base and left on the ground near where it stood. The tail and head were taken by the culprits.

Tire tracks covered the pavement next to the grassy median where the statue stood.

The statue was a gift to the school by the 2010 senior class of MWHS, which raised $6,000 to purchase and install the mascot in front of the school.

MWHS Assistant Principal Diane McArver said the new mascot was installed at the beginning of the month and was paid for by the school district.

Magnolia ISD spokesperson Charlie Brown said the statue was purchased on Aug. 17 for $1,850 with surplus funds from the district’s previous year budget and not from the 2010-11 fiscal year budget passed on Aug. 23.

McArver, who worked with the seniors last year in raising funds for the previous mascot, said students and staff are happy to see a new mascot installed.

“Everybody’s excited,” she said, “especially officers from last year. We were so disappointed when it happened. We’re glad to see we were able to put it back up and hope it remains unharmed.”

Additional security measures were taken for the new mascot, including a light that shines directly on the statue and security cameras.

Hill said the investigation into the vandalism incident is still active and authorities are still working on leads in the case.
