| Magnolia city secretary retires after three years |
|
Magnolia City Secretary Debra Brent has resigned after three years.
Brent announced her resignation during a Sept. 14 council meeting, where she handed Mayor Todd Kana and the council her resignation letter. “Not because I’m mad or anything,” she clarified to the Mayor and council. “I always wanted to be a nurse, that’s always been my passion.” Brent added that she was “too old” to be a nurse now, but planned to volunteer at nursing homes and children’s hospitals. “We’ll definitely miss you,” said Kana. “We appreciate everything you’ve done. You’ve been through some tough times in Magnolia and stuck it out. We all appreciate it.” Her announcement was met by a standing ovation by the Mayor, council and audience members. Kana said the city will be looking to hire a new city secretary. In her time with the city, Brent weathered nearly a dozen employee departures and council shakeups, including former city secretary LuAnn Drake’s firing in July 2009 and City Administrator Ryan Kelley’s resignation following a DWI arrest in April. She said in addition to volunteering, she plans to spend more time with her family and grandchildren. Brent worked for the city since 2007, first as deputy city secretary before she was promoted to city secretary two months after Drake’s departure. Before working for Magnolia, she spent 10 years as deputy city secretary in Brenham. Brent’s last day will be Oct. 1.
