Ren Fest set to kick off 36th season

ren fest The Texas Renaissance Festival will once again open to the public starting Oct. 9 and 10, marking its 36th year.

The festival is held yearly on eight weekends in October and November in Plantersville, about 12 miles north of Magnolia.

Popular events and activities at the Ren Fest include jousting, an Alpine yodeling contest and a Bratwurst eating contest.

More than 400,000 people attend the Ren Fest annually, according to a press release from the festival.

The two-month long event recreates a 16th century British village, complete with food, drink and entertainment.

New additions for this year’s fest include the “Pooch Paddock,” which will provide on-site pet care for people traveling with pets, as pets are not allowed on the fair grounds.

Another new addition to the fest will be performances by Adam Winrich, a Guinness World Record-holder in whip cracking.

“Right now ticket sales are up,” said Marketing Manager Tami Benton. “We’re anticipating a really nice festival and a nice year.”

Each weekend during the festival run has a different theme. This year’s themes will include Oktoberfest, 1,001 Dreams, Pirate Adventure, Highland Fling and Celtic Christmas.

For those making the trek to the festival this year, Benton listed what not to bring on festival grounds; any type of firearms, pets and food or drinks.

The festival does take credit cards and does provide ATM machines, as well as free parking.

“We’ve got the same great entertainment and, of course, our jousting troupe is always with us,” said Benton. “It’s a great family value.”
