Magnolia park pavilion dedication slated for Saturday

A dedication ceremony for Magnolia’s Unity Park pavilion will be hosted by the city on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony is open to the public. City officials are hoping many residents in the area will attend.

Although the park has been the site of the past two Fourth of July celebrations, the upcoming ceremony will dedicate the pavilion in honor of Jonny and Patsy Williams. The open-air pavilion is 75,000 square feet and can accommodate 500. It offers a kitchen and serving counters, as well as restrooms. Other amenities of the 30-acre Unity Park include hiking and biking trails, an amphitheater, splash pad, children’s shaded play area, wetland observation deck, picnic tables, sand volleyball courts and a skate park.

Jonny Williams has been credited with being the driving force behind Unity Park, serving on both the Magnolia 4A Economic Development Corp. and the 4B Community Development Corp., and as chair of the Unity Park Steering Committee. Patsy Williams has served on City Council since 1992

“We began the park with an idea more than five years ago,” Jonny Williams said. “With the help of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the vision of the city’s 4A and 4B Corporations, the community’s support, cooperation of the school district and Commissioner Craig Doyal and Charlie Riley, I believe it is now the jewel of southwest Montgomery County.”

The free, public ceremony will include music by several Magnolia ISD choirs and bands. Unity Park is located off Nichols Sawmill Road on Unity Park Drive just before the Magnolia ISD Celeste G. Graves Education Support Center.
