| German Christmas Market, city festival combine for big Tomball weekend |
|
Tomball’s annual German Christmas Market, this year dubbed “Weihnachtsmarkt Texas Style,” is set for Dec. 11 and 12 at the Train Depot Plaza, located at 201 S. Elm. The Market will coincide with the City of Tomball’s monthly Second Saturday at the Depot. The event will run Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission and parking is free. Enjoy the family-friendly ambience of this unique music/street festival with three stages of live music and an open air market, along with antique shops in the old town area. Tap your feet to the music of Chris Rybak, Alpenfest Trio, Das Ist Lustig, Tubameisters, Valina, and get into the festive spirit with the sounds of strolling Christmas carolers. This year the festival will recognize its Texas heritage with a Texas music stage featuring well known and local country music artists. An estimated 120 unique street vendors will line Market and South Walnut Streets selling German Christmas items, arts and crafts and more. Visit the “Weihnachtshaus” inside the Community Center at 221 Market Street. The German tent and music stage will be located near 201 Market Street and will house the “biergarten” decorated in a German theme and Christmas lights. Tables and chairs will allow you to relax with your “Dunkles Bier” (dark beer), or a warm cup of “Glühwein.” Don’t miss the traditional Dutch Santa, elf, live Christmas tree, clowns and Royal Bavarian Guard. The “Kinderfest” (kid’s area) will provide entertainment and fun for the young visitors. It includes carnival rides, bungee-jumping, rock wall, petting zoo, pony rides, bounce house and more. Enjoy the large outdoor movie screen, a hayride and the Christmas lights tour. Food vendors will include traditional German food and drink, “Glühwein” (mulled wine), beer, Christmas Stollen and homemade breads, “Kaffee und Kuchen” (coffee and pastry), bratwurst, red cabbage, sauerkraut, apple strudel, as well as festival foods like funnel cakes, corn dogs, hot dogs, hamburgers, kettle korn and barbeque. Highlights of the Festival will include the lighting of the city Christmas tree, fireworks, music on the Depot stage, Santa’s arrival and the dedication and unveiling of the new bronze statue of Elmer Beckendorf representing the impact of agriculture to Tomball. The festival is sponsored by the City of Tomball, Tomball Sister City, and German Heritage Festival. For more information, visit www.tomballsistercity.org.
