| Candlelight Tours gets patriotic in 32nd year |
|
The Tomball Museum Center’s 32nd Annual Candlelight Tours, set for Dec. 10 and 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. each night, will feature a “Red, White and Blue Celebration,” with many of the Center’s nine buildings featuring Americana décor. According to Jean Alexander, Director of the Tomball Museum Center, each year the theme for Candlelight Tours changes. Part of the festivities that will go along with the patriotic theme will include members of a local elementary school presenting a formal presentation of the U.S. flag. Traditional events returning this year will be live bands, both Friday and Saturday evenings in the complex’s Farm Museum. On Friday, country music ensemble Laff, Inc., will perform, while a bluegrass band will be featured on Saturday night. The Center’s church hall will also feature live music by chorals and traditional bands, Alexander said. The Tomball Museum Center features nine buildings, including a doctor’s office, farm house, church, fellowship hall, log house, the Henry Theiss House, a gazebo, school house and oil camp house. The crown jewel and centerpiece of the complex is the Griffin Memorial House, built in 1860 and dedicated to the museum in 1969. A Museum Center host will be on hand at each of the complex’s facilities. Alexander explained that the Candlelight Tours is “not truly an informational tour,” but guides will be there to answer questions and provide historical background regarding each of the buildings. Alexander estimates that each year the event brings in about 2,000 visitors to the Museum Center. She calls the event “a good family outing.” Candlelight Tours is a free event, but Alexander said the Center does welcome donations. “We consider this our Christmas card to the community,” Alexander said.
