New elementary school, admin building on tap for Tomball ISD

With the Tomball Independent School District Board of Trustees’ approval Jan. 11 of plans for a new elementary school in The Woodlands, construction is nearing on what should be the final facility planned from the district’s 2007 bond project.

With a price tag of $15.9 million, K-6 #2, as its currently being referred to, is projected to open in August 2012 and will be located on Creekside Green Drive in Tomball.

The new school will closely resemble the recently-opened Creekside Forest Elementary with some modifications. Dyad Construction has been selected as the general contractor for the school, which has been designed by PBK Architects.

Early projections estimate that the school will cover approximately 112,000 square feet and have capacity for 850 students, teachers, administrators and support staff.

K-6 #2 will be the district’s eighth new facility in six years that has been funded by the $198 million in bonds district voters approved in 2007.

The first project completed by the district was Canyon Pointe Elementary in August 2008 at a cost of $13.3 million. A year later, Creekside Forest Elementary, at $14.4 million, opened in The Woodlands as the district’s first K-6 campus. That same month, the district opened its new Technology and Staff Development Center.

While K-6 #2 looks to be the last project under the 2007 bond, the district is far from finished opening new facilities.

Later this year one of the crown jewels of the program will open its doors when Tomball Memorial High School will welcome students. Located on Northpointe Ridge Road in the southern portion of the district, Tomball Memorial’s total cost will eclipse $67 million.

The 360,000-square-foot building will house up to 2,500 students in grades 9 through 12. The campus will also include a junior varsity football field, competition soccer, baseball and softball fields and three additional practice fields.

Construction on the school is scheduled to be completed in May.

Nearing completion and expected to open this month is the district’s new $8.5 million, 40,000-square-foot Ancillary Services and Transportation Annex, located on Baker Driver near the site of the former Beckendorf Intermediate campus.

Construction is expected to begin next month on the district’s new Central Administration Building, which will be located on the site of the current “Cherry Street Building” housing the Ancillary Services Department. The $6 million Administration Building will be designed to resemble the district’s original administration facility and “will maintain the historical character and components of the original building as much as possible,” according to the district.
