| Waller County making strides in effort for animal control |
|
After almost two years Waller County is still working towards building an animal control facility. However, the county now has an Animal Control Officer and laws regarding animals within the county.
Waller County chose Don Jones as the Animal Control Officer for the County two years ago. The Waller County Animal Control website states that Jones has more than 10 years experience handling animals.
In addition, Waller County established ordinances two years ago that stated animals within the county had to be on a leash and must receive rabies vaccinations each year.
According to Jones, the ordinances follow state laws that the county previously had not adopted and the county ordinances only apply to the rural areas of Waller County.
Additionally, the ordinance states that Jones can pick up stray animals that may be dangerous or cause harm to residents or livestock.
Jones said the county currently lacks an animal facility and stray animals are housed at local kennels and veterinarian offices throughout the county.
“Calls (for strays) have increased,” Jones said.
According to the website, the local kennels can only house animals for five days before they must be picked up by the owner, adopted or euthanized.
Jones occasionally refers residents to Montgomery County because of the lack of space at local kennels.
While attempting to remove stray animals from the county, Jones is also encouraging animal owners to follow the ordinances by providing vaccination clinics.
“I am trying to put on five rabies clinics a year,” Jones said.
On those days Jones said a local veterinarian accompanies him and they are able to provide rabies shots for $10 and microchips to find lost pets for $15.
“We are getting more and more recognition,” he added.
Jones said local organizations have been helping raise money for a Waller County facility. He is also working on growing the Waller County Animal Control budget.
“We’ve got somewhat of a budget going,” he said. “We hope it increases so we can get a facility.”
