| Magnolia sets election date, three council positions on ballot |
|
The Magnolia City Council will hold a general election on May 14 in which three positions will be up for election.
At its Feb. 8 meeting, the council voted May 14 as the date for the election which will feature races for Positions 1, 2 and 3.
Currently, Position 1 is held by Sammie Scott who has served for two terms. Scott stated that he will not be running for re-election.
Position 2 is held by John Bramlett who has served on city council since 1983. He served as Mayor in 1984 and again from 1992 to 2001. He was elected to serve on city council in May 2007 and re-elected to Position 2 in May 2009.
Bramlett said he is unsure if he will run for re-election.
“Truthfully, I haven’t decided one way or the other,” he said.
Position 3 is held by Chris Schod, who stated he will be running for re-election. Schod has served on city council since June 2010 after replacing Todd Kana. Kana became mayor following Jimmy Thorton’s term.
Citizens interested in running may now file applications. The last day to file for a place on the ballot is March 14.
In addition, the general election will include one proposition. Citizens will be able to vote on whether or not to legalize the sale of alcoholic beverages, including mixed beverages, within the city limits.
In conjunction with the city election, Magnolia ISD will conduct a joint election with the City of Magnolia. New state regulations say that indendpent school districts can no longer hold their own elections and must pair with a municipality, according to Kana.
