| Local Police Departments initiating 2011 Great Texas Warrant Round-Up |
|
Magnolia Police Department (MPD) and Tomball Police Department (TPD) will begin the “2011 Great Texas Warrant Round-Up” on March 5 along with approximately 300 other law enforcement jurisdictions across Texas.
Law enforcement agencies volunteering to participate in the effort have placed all warrants in one system in order to make the round-up a cooperative effort, according to MPD Police Chief Domingo Ibarra.
Ibarra said that the annual event targets any type of warrant ranging from municipal court warrants to felony warrants.
According to TPD and MPD, they each have thousands of active warrants that they will be attempting to clear.
Ibarra said prior to a warrant being issued individuals are notified, then they are notified again once the warrant becomes active. If the warrant is not properly taken care of the citizen will be arrested.
In addition, Ibarra explained that MPD implemented a plan last year in which the department mailed notices to warrant holders reminding them and explaining how they could settle their warrant. The department also hung notices on citizen’s door knobs.
“A lot of people did respond to these notices,” he said.
TPD Warrant Officer Frank Mitchell emphasized, “We are notifying defendants that there are numerous options available to assist them in quickly and conveniently taking care of their outstanding warrants without being arrested before March 5.”
TPD has encouraged defendants to take advantage of one of the options available to settle outstanding warrants. However, they added that no amnesty is being offered in conjunction with the round-up effort.
Once the round-up begins TPD and MPD will actively pursue persons on the warrant list, each department stated, and arrests can take place at any location, including the defendant’s home, school or workplace.
“Wherever we find them, we arrest them,” Ibarra said.
TPD said notices are being mailed to last known addresses of the defendants.
Ibarra and TPD stated that residents who think they have an active warrant should contact their municipal court.
