Magnolia preparing for Heritage Day on the Stroll

Put on your cowboy hat and get ready because the Magnolia Community Foundation Stroll Committee will be hosting the first Heritage Day on the Stroll March 26.

City council member Patsy Williams said this particular event is geared towards a country western theme. Heritage Day will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The event will celebrate the heritage of the area and “how Magnolia became Magnolia,” Stroll Committee member Phyllis Stegen said.

Guests can also expect to hear history of the city from local historian Celeste Graves.

Stegen said the Stroll will have mock cattle roping, hay rides, arts and crafts, food and wine from local wineries.

In addition, live music will also be featured during the event. The Republic will be performing from 3 to 7 p.m.

Williams said guests are encouraged to dress in country western attire.

“The Stroll is just such a great outdoor venue for our city,” Stroll Committee Director Dona Hunt said. “It gives us a place to gather for events like Heritage Day and gives us a place we can enjoy everyday.”

The Stroll opened in April 2010 and has hosted the Harvest Festival and is a walking area for locals.

Stegen said with the economy in its current situation the Stroll is an opportunity to show residents what Magnolia has to offer while spending little money.

“With the economy like it is, we do have things to do close to home. You don’t have to drive far to have fun,” she said.

She said the idea behind the Stroll is to bring economic development and tourism to the area.

The Stroll Committee has planned four other events this year. In May the Stroll will host the Fiesta of Flowers, then the 1st Annual Car Show is scheduled. Williams said the Stroll will feature a tailgating party in August to kick off the school year.

The committee also plans to partner with the Texas Renaissance Festival and let art and food vendors set up on the Stroll the weekend prior to the festival opening.

“The point is to reach different tastes of the community,” Williams said.

The Stroll entrance is located at Sullivan Park at the intersection of FM 1488 and FM 1774. Admission and parking for Heritage Day are free. Parking is available at the Magnolia Farmers Market located across from the Stroll entrance. For more information, call Stegen at 713-806-3453.
