| Magnolia elections cancelled, candidates uncontested |
|
The City of Magnolia and Magnolia ISD will no longer hold a general election on May 14 because all positions are uncontested. However, two new faces are set to appear on city council.
City council Position 1 is currently held by Sammie Scott who chose not to run for re-election. Former Magnolia Area Chamber of Commerce President Ann Sundquist is set to fill the position.
Chris Schod will continue to hold Position 2. He will begin his second term.
Jeff Chumley, owner of Chumley Wrecker Service, was uncontested for Position 3, which is currently held by John Bramlett. Bramlett also chose not to seek re-election.
Council Positions 1, 2 and 3 are two year terms and are voted on in odd- numbered years.
In addition, Magnolia ISD announced that Positions 4 and 5 of its Board of Trustees were uncontested. Vice President Charlie Riley and Trustee Brent O’Neal will remain on the school board.
Communications Officer Charlie Brown said he believed that Riley and O’Neal were uncontested due to the budget situation that the school is currently facing.
“(The lack of contestants is) possibly a sign of the hard economic times and the inherent difficult financial decisions that the Board faces in the upcoming years,” Brown stated about the school board receiving no additional applications.
Texas Legislators are anticipating a $9.8 billion education budget shortfall, which translates to a $12 million shortfall for MISD.
Riley will begin his sixth year in May. He has served since 2005 and will begin his third term. O’Neal has served four terms beginning in 1999.
