| Community Association looking to preserve Lake Creek Greenway |
|
East 1488 Community Association President Glenn Buckley asked Magnolia ISD for its support at the regular School Board meeting held April 11.
Buckley explained that the Lake Creek Greenway project would be similar to the Spring Creek Greenway in that areas could be preserved and protected to promote wildlife, plant life, recreation, flood control and ecology.
The greenway project extends from Cimarron County to Camp Strake and encompasses about 64 acres.
Pictured is an area of Lake Creek that lies between Honea Egypt and the Fish Creek Thoroughfare.
According to Buckley, the majority of Lake Creek is flood plains which carry large habitats such as forests and wetlands. The habitats provide flood control, water quality and recreation.
He is concerned that residents and development will encroach on the area preventing the community from having better flood control.
“This is an opportunity to preserve something that is likely to go away,” he said.
He predicted that by 2035 most of Montgomery County, the sixth fastest growing county in the state, would be almost fully developed.
Some areas have already been preserved such as the area of the creek that runs through Montgomery Trace, which lies between the Fish Creek Thoroughfare and Honea Egypt.
While Buckley says he understands funds may not be readily available, there are many options to preserve the greenway. Some options are conservation easements or a watershed protection plan.
Another option is to apply for grants. Buckley said the county has moved faster than anticipated on the Spring Creek Greenway project and funds may be available there.
Buckley said he is currently trying to obtain support for the plan to preserve the area before moving forward. Pct. 2 Commissioner Craig Doyal signed a resolution of support for the project. Buckley will also visit Conroe ISD and Montgomery ISD.
He said he isn’t asking for money, just a resolution that says he has the district’s support.
At its meeting the School Board took no action regarding whether or not to sign the resolution.
“At this time, the board is still considering whether or not to adopt a resolution stating its support of the project,” MISD Communications Officer Charlie Brown said.
