Media reports out of Louisville, Ken., and central Illinois, where Nylander had family ties, stated Nylander was among ten Americans killed, nine of whom were members of the U.S. military and one a contractor, when a member of the Afghan military being trained by the U.S. opened fire.
Louisville NBC affiliate WAVE 3 reported that Nylander’s body was to be flown back to the U.S. to Dover Air Force Base on April 29.
As of press time last week, the Department of Defense had not confirmed the incident nor the names of any servicemen killed in such an incident.
Nylander graduated from Waller High School Magna Cum Laude in 1994 and later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. According to Waller ISD, Nylander’s wife and three children live in Tuscon, Ariz.
“Our deepest condolences go to Nathan’s family, friends and the entire Waller ISD community during this difficult time,” Waller ISD Superintendent Danny Twardowski stated in a press release last week.
Twardowski said Nylander’s legacy will be honored during a memorial tribute at the Waller Bulldogs’ first home football game of 2011. Nylander’s name will be added to the Waller ISD Faller Heroes Monument displayed at Waller ISD Stadium.
