Magnolia fireworks show still a go despite drought

The Fourth of July in Unity Park is a go again this year, but what city officials are excited about is the fireworks display.

“We will be having a professional aerial display produced by Bay Fireworks,” Magnolia Economic Development Coordinator Deborah Rose Miller said. “We feel very fortunate to offer this as I understand some cities throughout the region have been forced to cancel theirs due to the drought.”

Not only will the city’s third annual celebration at Unity Park offer fireworks, but beginning at 7:30 p.m. there will be an old-fashioned Fourth of July Parade, “Honoring our Freedom.”

City officials and employees who are veterans will ride a new Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department truck to serve as collective parade marshals. Local residents who are active duty or veterans of the U.S. are invited to join the parade marshal group during the line-up to ride or walk the quarter-mile route.

Parade entries are asked to arrive for line-up at 6:30 p.m. at the Magnolia 6th Grade campus. There is no fee to enter the parade and children with bikes are welcome, along with homemade floats and decorated cars and trucks. Due to the short route and the seasonal heat, horses are not being accepted into the parade this year.

Judging of the parade will take place at the end of the route at the Williams Pavilion in Unity Park where the Texas Renaissance Festival's King George and his court will decree the “most patriotic float.” The winner will receive four tickets to this year’s Renaissance Festival. After parade judging, colors will be presented by the Tomball VFW Post 2420.

Music will be by the Country All-Stars, who have performed at the Magnolia Depot Day.

There is no admission for the Fourth of July in Unity Park and parking is free. Throughout the evening there will be complimentary samples of local restaurant fare offered under the pavilion. The public is also encouraged to bring baskets to picnic on the grounds. The children’s splash pad will be on, and the sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits and skate ramp will also be available, in addition to several picnic tables and the pavilion.

Fireworks will light up the sky beginning at 9:20 p.m. as the Country All-Stars perform patriotic favorites.

“Once again the City of Magnolia is honored to offer this community-wide celebration," Magnolia City Administrator Paul Mendes said. "With good luck the conditions will hold for the fireworks to go off without a hitch. We are keeping in touch with the county fire marshal’s office.”

Unity Park is located one-half mile southwest from the intersection of FM 1774 and Nichols Sawmill Road, entrance to the park is on Nichols Sawmill Road. For more information visit, CityofMagnolia.com or call 281-356-2266.

With the parade and so much to do at the Unity Park and as much as I love fire works, the beauty and the noise, I sincerly wish this part was being by pa*sed this year. Our Fire Department Folks are so tired after a solid week of fighting fires in Grimes County and all of the ban burning fires that I honestly believe we each need to honor them ... It's just to dry period and so much at risk .. Just ask the folks that lost it all. Without SOS and the Magnolia Residents the folks would have nothing to start over with .. Please consider the conditions.
