| Bowling alley argument leads to gunfire |
|
Two Houston-area men and a juvenile have been arrested in connection with an argument at the Tomball Bowling Center that escalated into gunfire last month. Anthony Devon Byrd, 25, Nestor Daniel Villela, 22, and a juvenile have each been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon after police say they were involved in a shooting incident on June 18. According to Capt. Ricky Doerre of the Tomball Police Department, at approximately 11 p.m., two males and a female became involved in a verbal and possibly physical altercation with the three suspects in the parking lot of the Tomball Bowling Center.
He added that the three suspects came to the Tomball Bowling Center from Houston and that there may have been contact between the suspects and the two males and the female on the Internet. “I think they probably had chatted online, which brought them (the suspects) out here,” Doerre said. “It (the stories) just doesn’t add up.” Doerre said that “some things” were said to the female and her friends “took offense” to what was said, which was when the altercation escalated. At that point, Doerre said, Byrd pulled a shotgun out and pointed it in the direction of the two males and the female “and basically made threatening statements.” The female ran inside the Bowling Center and called police. The two males got into their truck and left the scene. According to the Tomball PD, Byrd, Villela and the juvenile followed in their own vehicle. The department stated in a report that as the two vehicles were traveling east on FM 2920, the two males fleeing the scene “heard two loud bangs and the back window of the truck shattered.” The two males driving the damaged truck then returned to the Bowling Center where Tomball Police officers had responded.
Arrest warrants for the three suspects were quickly issued. “Through information gained early on in the investigative process, credible leads were developed, suspects were identified and arrest warrants were filed,” the department stated. Two days later, on June 20, a Hispanic male juvenile was arrested at his home in northwest Harris County on two felony charges, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Doerre said the juvenile suspect had three previous felonies on his record. Doerre also said it is believed he was the shooter in the incident. The juvenile was transported to the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center. Then, on June 23, members of the Houston Police Department’s Warrant Apprehension Team arrested Byrd and Villela at their home in the 4250 block of West 34th Street in Houston. Doerre explained that the female involved in the altercation was able to obtain the license’s plate of the suspect’s vehicle, which she relayed to investigators. They were then able to identify the owner of the vehicle, Villela’s father. It is believed that Villela was the driver of the suspect vehicle.
