Tomball football set for identical schedule in 2011

As soon as the final whistle blew in the Tomball Cougar football team’s 24-0 loss to Longview in the Class 5A regional semifinals in November of last year, Cougar football fans have been counting down the days until this season.

Last year, the Cougars were one of the surprise teams of the Houston area, and certainly in district 13-5A, as they steamrolled through the schedule on their way to a 10-2 record, with several wins coming in blowout fashion.

They won their first two playoff games against Kingwood and Austin Anderson before falling to Longview in a season that was the most successful in 20 years for the Cougars.

Now, with the release of the 2011 schedule, the Cougars can now officially plot their much hoped-for repeat performance.

After a scrimmage against Cy Fair, the Cougars will open the 2011 season at home on Aug. 26 when they take on the Katy Morton Ranch Mavericks, who went 1-9 overall last season. The week one match up will be a rematch of the non-district contest last year which the Cougars won easily, 45-16.

The remaining two non-district games will be against the Jersey Village Falcons, also 1-9 last year, at Pridgeon Stadium on Sept. 2 and at home against the Katy Mayde Creek Rams (2-8) on Sept. 9. Both of those games will also be rematches from 2010.

Last year, the Cougars blew out the Falcons, 43-6 and were just as dominant against the Rams in winning 42-10.

The Cougars will once again be hoping to pad their overall record against teams who struggled last year during the non-district schedule. The combined record last year of their three opponents in non-district play was 4-26.

The “second season,” or district 13-5A play, will begin in earnest on Sept. 24 after an open week for the Cougars. Tomball will take on the Westfield Mustangs (6-4) at George Stadium at 6 p.m. Tomball won last year’s meeting, 37-30 in thrilling fashion.

On Sept. 30, the Cougars will face another team they handily defeated last year in the Spring Lions for their homecoming game at 7 p.m. The Cougars beat Spring in 2010, 34-7.

It won’t be until Week 7 of the season when Tomball finally faces a playoff team from 2010. The Klein Collins Tigers were one of the state’s top ranked teams last year after compiling a 10-1 record, which included one of just two losses Tomball suffered last year, 42-0.

Tomball will face the Tigers on the road at Klein Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m.

On Oct. 14 Tomball will return home to face a DeKaney Wildcats team that went 6-4 last year. One of those losses was to Tomball, who edged the Wildcats, 28-27.

The Cougars will play their lone Thursday night game of the season on Oct. 20 when they return to Klein Memorial Stadium to play the Klein Oak Panthers. The Panthers went 8-4 last year on their way to earning the district’s third spot in the playoffs.

The Panthers handed Tomball their other district loss last season, winning 24-17.

The second of back-to-back road games at Klein Memorial will conclude Oct. 29 when Tomball faces the Klein Bearkats at 2 p.m. The Bearkats were 13-5A’s fourth-seeded playoff team last year and lost to Tomball, 23-10.

The season finale will feature the return of the popular patriotic show at Tomball Stadium when the Cougars take on the Klein Forest Golden Eagles (2-8) on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.

The Cougars beat Klein Forest last year, 23-10.
