The Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) was dispatched to what appeared to be a house fire in the Westwood subdivision on FM 1488 on July 5 at 5 p.m. Firefighters soon discovered the fire was likely a result of a murder, suicide and arson.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) reported that the two residents of the home, Floyd Meeks, 64, and his wife of 20 years Nancy Meeks, 65, had both suffered gunshot wounds.

MCSO arrived on scene at the house located at 614 W. Weisinger Dr. and a fireman told officers that upon arriving at the home he discovered Floyd in the front yard with multiple gunshot wounds to his leg and torso.

While firefighters attempted to battle the blaze inside of the home, they discovered Nancy inside with a single gunshot wound to her head.

Floyd died at the scene. Nancy was transported to a nearby hospital, but later was pronounced dead.

MCSO Lt. Dan Norris said the evidence available leads investigators to believe the incident was a result of a murder, suicide and arson.

Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes and Crime Scene Section worked in conjunction with the Fire Marshal’s Office late into the night examining evidence. According to the current available evidence, the investigators believe Nancy shot her husband, set fire to their home and then shot herself.

However, Norris said the investigation remains open and investigators “will keep an open mind” while examining evidence.

As of press time last week it was not known if the couple was having problems. Norris said investigators will look into and examine the issue.

The house fire was contained and the home did not completely go up in flames.
