FM 2978 among roads nearing completion

fm 2978 The Harris County section of FM 2978 between FM 2920 and the Montgomery County line is nearing completion and a grand opening ribbon cutting is set for Aug. 24.

The roadway was previously two lanes and has been replaced with a four lane roadway with a center turn lane. The construction also included an overpass over Hufsmith-Kuykendahl.

Montgomery County Pct. 2 Commissioner Craig Doyal said the FM 2978 road expansion is intended stretch to FM 1488. However, funding is still unavailable for the Montgomery County section of FM 2978 between Spring Creek and FM 1488.

He explained that while no funding is in place, the county is still in the process of obtaining right-of-way and environmental clearance along FM 2978 in Montgomery County.

Doyal said the county wants to be proactive with right-of-way and environmental clearance so that businesses along the route know what to expect when funding does become available.

The stretch between Spring Creek and FM 1488 will also be a four lane roadway with a center turn lane. The plans include eventually widening the Spring Creek Bridge to a four lane roadway also, according to Doyal.

The Westwood Parkway Improvement District (WPID) is still working on extending Research Forest Drive from Branch Crossing to Egypt Lane, Doyal said.

WPID had a two-cent sales tax increase on commercial transactions in its boundaries in November. The purpose of the sales tax increase was primarily to fund the Research Forest Drive project.

Doyal said design plans are underway for the extension.

Kuykendahl now extends to FM 1488. Kuykendahl ends at Alden Bridge Drive in the Woodlands. Doyal said the county is working on funding to finish the area of Kuykendahl from Alden Bridge Drive to Crown Ridge Drive, which is the last remaining section of Kuykendahl to be completed in the area.

At the new intersection of FM 1488 and Kuykendahl a large H.E.B. is nearing completion as well.

The upcoming ribbon cutting for the Harris County portion of FM 2978 will be held at South Texas Ready Mix parking lot, 24403 FM 2978, Tomball on Aug. 24 at 10 a.m.
