Fallen hero to be honored at Waller football game |
|
Nathan Nylander, a Waller High School graduate, is a hero. Nylander, an Air Force Captain, was among nine servicemen killed in a firefight near Kabul, Afghanistan on April 27.
Now his hometown is looking to honor his heroism in a service before Waller’s first home football game Aug. 26.
“A special memorial tribute will be held before game time,” Melissa Phillips, of Waller ISD, said.
Nylander’s name will be added to the Fallen Heroes Memorial at the Waller ISD football stadium.
WISD is asking that all local veterans gather at 7 p.m. at the granite memorial, located at the south end of the stadium. Veterans participating will be able to take part in a special ceremony.
Nylander was killed when he and others were shot at by a member of the Afghan military who was being trained by U.S. forces.
Nylander graduated from Waller in 1994, with honors. At the time of his death Nylander’s wife and three children resided in Tuscon, Ariz. As of press time it was not known if they would be attending the ceremony.
“Please join other Bulldog fans on Aug. 26 to honor Nathan and to cheer on the varsity Bulldogs,” Phillips said.
Reserved seating season tickets are already on sale. General admission seats will go on sale Aug. 22. All citizens age 65 and older will be admitted free of charge if they obtain a Waller ISD Senior Citizen Pass.
