Thacker has been involved in law enforcement for 44 years working for several agencies, including the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the Magnolia Police Department.

While working for Magnolia Police Department, Thacker was told the chief position was available at Stagecoach and soon got the job. Stagecoach is a small city founded in 1974, with a population of about 600, nestled in the woods next door to Magnolia. The police department has three paid positions and six reserve officers. Thacker said he has enjoyed working for the community and it has been an interesting environment to be involved with. “It’s been very rewarding (working in Stagecoach),” he said. “It’s a wonderful community. I have made a lot of friends.” Stagecoach Sgt. Mike Wethington has worked alongside Thacker for 11 years. “I’m sorry to see him leave, but everyone comes to a point (of retirement),” Wethington said. “He needs to do something else. He wants to retire.” In addition to his avid involvement in law enforcement, Thacker was one of the founding members of the Magnolia Rotary Club. In Rotary he is a past president and also a recipient of the Paul Harris Award. He also was president and member of the board of the Society of Samaritans (SOS) for more than 12 years. Thacker represented SOS in Magnolia Area Chamber of Commerce events as well. On his 35-acre property located on Nichols Sawmill, Thacker said he trains people how to use handguns and also provides concealed handgun licensing classes. He said after retirement he plans to continue doing handgun classes on his property. Thacker will officially retire on Sept. 30. A celebration of his retirement was held Sept. 18 at the Stagecoach Park.
