Tomball approves new water feature at Depot

tomball splashpad A new splash pad and fountain at the Depot were approved by the Tomball City Council on Sept. 19. The new design calls for a separate area for both features, connected by a walkway.

“An oil derrick will be placed in the fountain to commemorate our oil background,” Tomball Mayor Gretchen Fagan said. “This fountain will tell the story of how Tomball came to be.”

Aquascapes Pool and Spas will construct the feature, which the city hopes to have completed by next summer. The new design was approved after some council members expressed concern with the first design. The new design, however, is more expensive with an estimated cost of just over $67,000.

The project is being funded through the hotel/motel tax fund, as well as a $25,000 grant from the Tomball Economic Development Corp (TEDC). The city is also using a little artistic creativity in helping to fund the project, according to Fagan.

“Pavers will surround the fountain and splash pad,” Fagan said. “(The pavers) may be purchased for $150 each.”

In other council business, the council approved several new zoning requests, as well as an update to the contract with WCA Waste Management for garbage collection.

The major zoning request came from TEDC, who requested a zoning change on 97 acres off of Hufsmith-Kohrville Road for a future industrial park. The council passed the request unanimously.

The final action of the meeting was the council’s decision to extend the contract of City Manager George Shackleford.
