Waller cowboy earns top honors in bareback riding at Rodeo Houston

Cannon The Waller community was well represented at the recently concluded Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as local resident Clint Cannon came away as Bareback Bronc Riding champion, as well as with a hefty paycheck for his efforts.

“I look forward all year to the Houston Rodeo,” Cannon said. “It’s my hometown rodeo, and everyone gets a chance to come out and see me.”

Cannon competed in the second of the Super Series groups and staked his claim as an early favorite after a first round score of 84 points. That score put him in second place after the first go round and earned him $1,000.

The field facing Cannon in his Super Series grouping was just as much of a challenge as the horse he was riding.

Of the 10 contestants in his pool, only Cannon and another contestant had not competed in the National Rodeo.

Cannon took the top spot in the second go around with a score of 85.5, which added another $2,000 to his Rodeo Houston total.

The Waller cowboy cemented his spot in the semi-finals with another 85.5 showing in the third go round, tying for first with Tom McFarland of Wickerburg, Ariz.

In the second semifinal round, Cannon kept up his impressive riding, carding a score of 81.5, good for a tie for second and a trip to the Championship Shootout.

With four contestants competing in the shootout, Cannon was assured of taking home at least $9,000 for a fourth place finish. The others in the finals were Heath Ford of Greeley, Colo., Will Lowe of Canyon, and Kelly Timberman of Mills, Wyo.,

Cannon made it no contest, saving his best performance of Rodeo Houston for the shootout, when he earned a score of 92, 5.5 points better than the closest competitor.

“I pretty much did save my best for last,” he said. “I’ve won big rodeos before, but this is my biggest ever.”

Cannon’s first place finish in the Championship Shootout earned him another $50,000, which brought his 2009 Rodeo Houston total winnings to $59,000. That total has qualified him for the National Rodeo to be held in December in Las Vegas.
