Light turnout for election to amend state Constitution

Voter turnout was light−just under nine percent−in Harris County for an election deciding new amendments to the Texas Constitution, as well as Houston City Council and school board races.

The following are the results for the constitutional amendments in both Harris County and statewide.

 

Proposition 1: Allowing surviving spouses of disabled veterans to continue receiving property tax exemptions - PASSED with 83 percent statewide and in Harris County.

 

Proposition 2: Allowing the Texas Water Division board to issue additional bonds without future voter approval - PASSED with 52 percent statewide and 53 percent in Harris County.

 

Proposition 3: Allowing the state to issue bonds to finance student loans without future voter approval - PASSED with 55 percent statewide and 61 percent in Harris County.

 

Proposition 4: Allowing the county the authority to blight land and issue bonds for development - FAILED with 60 percent voting against statewide and 57 percent against in Harris County.

 

Proposition 5: Allowing cities and counties to enter into local contracts - PASSED with 58 percent statewide and 54 percent in Harris County.

 

Proposition 6: Allowing the General Land Office to distribute education money based on different formulas - PASSED with 52 percent statewide and 57 percent in Harris County.

 

Proposition 7: Allowing El Paso County to create reclamation districts for parks and recreation use - FAILED with 52 percent statewide voting against and passing in Harris County by just 55 total votes.

 

Proposition 8: Allowing tax breaks for land owners to encourage water conservation - FAILED with 53 percent voting against it statewide, while passing in Harris County with 51 percent in favor.

 

Proposition 9: Allowing the Governor the authority to pardon someone who completes deferred adjudication program - PASSED with 57 percent statewide and 63 percent in Harris County.

 

Proposition 10: Extends the length of unexpired term a political official must automatically resign in order to seek another political office - PASSED with 56 percent statewide and 58 percent in Harris County.
