Tomball man indicted on third alcohol related offense

coppin shannon christopher A grand jury in Montgomery County handed down an indictment alleging that a Tomball man operated a boat while intoxicated.

Shannon C. Coppin, 39, was arrested last July on charges of Boating While Intoxicated and has been free on $5,000 bond since July 25.

According to court records, Coppin has been convicted twice for Driving While Intoxicated in Harris County. In May 1999 Coppin plead guilty to a Houston DWI offense and received a suspended 180 day jail sentence, two years of probation and a $400 fine.

In June of 2004 Coppin once again plead guilty to a DWI in Houston, this time receiving three days in the Harris County Jail and a $600 fine.

Coppin’s past convictions contributed to a judge ordering Coppin to install an inignition breath analysis device as a condition of bond. The device keeps a vehicle from starting before a driver gives a sample of his breathe into a machine.

Prosecutors say that Coppin may face heavier penalties if convicted given his prior alcohol-related history.

Coppin’s next court date is scheduled for Jan. 25 in Montgomery County District Court 359.
