Crashes, fires, firework injuries keeps MCFMO busy on New Year’s Eve

mcfmo fireworks The Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office (MCFMO) stayed busy between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with a reported 75 calls for service.

 

According to MCFMO, the first fireworks incident occurred in Magnolia early in the evening on New Year’s Day. A burn victim was brought to a Magnolia Fire Station on Nichols Sawmill Road. MCFMO said the victim was taken to the hospital.

 

Another incident occurred in the Ranch Crest subdivision near Magnolia. A seven-year-old was struck in the eye by fireworks. MCFMO said the victim was taken to the hospital and the incident was “luckily not detrimental.”

One of the most serious incidents occurred in Conroe. A 27-year-old male was reportedly lighting fireworks when one malfunctioned, striking him in the groin causing severe injuries. Fire and EMS crews requested air evacuation, but due to weather conditions, helicopters were unable to fly. The victim was transported by ambulance.

 

MCFMO reported several fires in the county, one of which was in Magnolia.

 

MCFMO stated that the Magnolia Fire Department responded to a fire on the roof of a home on Nichols Sawmill Road. This fire was reported to have started from fireworks igniting leaves on the roof.

 

Other reported fires in the county included a Christmas tree igniting in the living room of a residence and a garage catching fire after fireworks were discarded in a trash can that was located in the garage.

 

According to MCFMO, the home where the garage caught fire was severely damaged, but there were no reported injuries.

 

While MCFMO stated that it does not respond to all vehicle accidents, they did state that 13 vehicle crashes occurred.

 

A pick-up truck crashed and came to a rest supporting a broken power pole in Magnolia.

 

According to Magnolia Police Department (MPD), Officers Montgomery and Stanford were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident at 100 South Magnolia Boulevard. The vehicle involved was traveling north when the driver fell asleep and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle then struck an electric pole, which split in half leaving the pole supported by the vehicle. The occupants, a 32-year-old male and a 28-year-old male, both of Navasota sustained minor injuries.

 

MPD reported that the vehicle had to be left until the energy company could support the pole while the vehicle was removed.

 

Accidents that also occurred in other areas of the county included a vehicle that struck a pedestrian near a fireworks stand and a vehicle and motorcycle crash.

 

MCFMO will be investigating the cause of the structure fires and fireworks injuries. Investigations are open and continuing at this time.

 

It is unknown if any other victims from fireworks may have gone directly to local emergency rooms without calling 911, MCFMO explained. However, MCFMO said all residents are urged to use caution with any remaining fireworks.
