| District celebrates Leadership MISD graduating class, appoints trustee |
|
Leadership MISD is a new initiative which began in March 2011. Members of the program are parents of students in the district, who are given an opportunity to take part in an interactive, in-depth learning experience, according to school board trustees.
Pictured (from left) are Tammy Adams, Superintendent Dr. Todd Stephens, Chuck Adcox, Dan Burch, Joe Duncan, Marsha Foster, Maria Grancio, Cynetha Lee, Pam Rogers, Jenn Wells, Angela Wroten, Paula Weatherford and Board President Cecil Bell, Jr. The parents are able to go “behind the scenes” of MISD, meet the people who are responsible for programs and services and see first-hand how the district creates a climate of success for the growing student population, according to board members. Superintendent Dr. Todd Stephens said the intent of the program is to educate a segment of parents, have people ready to serve and help make decisions. Stephens said the parents give up one night a week to learn “School District 101.” The parents facilitate trustees with the school’s curriculum, take a bus trip around the district and learn about future dreams of the district. The parents are nominated by campus personnel to be a part of this group. Trustee Deborah Rose Miller said the members represent a balance between the east and west side of the district, as well as a balance between parents of elementary, secondary and high school level students. This is the second graduating class of Leadership MISD. Stephens said the goal is to hold a program each semester. Graduating this semester were Tammy Adams, Chuck Adcox, Dan Burch, Joe Duncan, Marsha Foster, Maria Grancio, Cynetha Lee, Pam Rogers, Jenn Wells, Angela Wroten, Paula Weatherford, Jay Faulkner, John Graziano, Petra Lopez and Lee Maney. MISD said this program has enabled the district to have candidates available who are better versed in what goes on in the district. From this program, MISD was able to appoint a new Position 7 member to the school board. Position 7 was previously held by Glenn Addison, who resigned to focus on his Senate campaign. The MISD Board of Trustees appointed James “Chuck” Adcox to Position 7. Adcox moved to Magnolia in 2006 after living in Houston. He grew up in Lubbock and graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. He and his wife Kathy met after graduation. They have been married for 17 years and have two children; Kristen and Colton. Kristen is in the third grade and Colton is in the first grade, both at Nichols Sawmill Elementary. Adcox has worked for Cardinal Health Pharmacy Solutions for 16 years. He currently serves as Chair of the Lake Committee of Indigo Lake Estates. Adcox said he moved to Magnolia for the district. “In my mind this is the best district in the state,” he said. He added that he was very honored and privileged to be serving on the school board. Adcox will serve the remainder of the term for Position 7, at which point he could seek re-election. The 2012 Magnolia Independent School District Board of Trustees election will be held May 12. Three-year terms up for election are Position 6 and Position 7.
