Magnolia mayor’s son arrested for second time in six months

For the second time in six months, the son of Magnolia Mayor Jimmy Thornton has been arrested.

Corey Thornton, 19, was arrested March 31 just outside of the Magnolia West High School campus by Montgomery County Pct. 5 constables and charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of marijuana, two Class A Misdemeanors.

According to Lt. Chris Jones of the Constable’s Office, Corey Thornton was stopped on FM 1774 at approximately 2:30 p.m., just as classes were letting out for the day at Magnolia West. Jones said deputies were responding to a disturbance at the high school after three witnesses called police and identified Thornton as a suspect.

Jones said riding in the vehicle along with Thornton was a juvenile student who attends Magnolia West. The juvenile was not ticketed or arrested in the incident.

Thornton was reportedly in possession of a knife with a 10-inch blade, a club and .12 ounces of marijuana. He was arrested and transported to the Montgomery County Jail, where he posted a $1,500 bail the following day.

Mayor Thornton said the knife his son was cited for was a hunting knife and that Corey did not pull it out.

“He didn’t pull a knife on anybody,” he said.

Mayor Thornton believes the situation involving his son was a set-up and that his son is innocent.

“It was all a set-up,” Thornton said. “His ex-girlfriend called him and asked to meet him at the high school and he went there to meet her.”

Thornton also said the marijuana did not belong to his son, but rather the passenger in the vehicle.

“The little bit of pot they found will not be pinned on him,” Thornton said. “It wasn’t Corey’s.”

According to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, Corey Thornton had yet to be indicted as of April 6.

In addition to the two misdemeanor charges, Corey is also under investigation by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for criminal mischief.

According to Lt. Dan Norris, the Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspect who allegedly damaged the vehicle of a female victim on Feb. 22. Norris said the suspect, whom he declined to name, blocked the victim’s vehicle and later struck at the back window of the car at a stoplight.

Corey Thornton also was arrested on Sept. 14, 2008 when he was among a group of three other suspects that were arrested for burglarizing a convenience store on Nichols Sawmill.

Rather than posting bail, Jimmy and his wife, Debbie, elected to leave their son in jail. Thornton said Corey later was bailed out by an aunt, whom he then moved in with.

According to the mayor, his son is currently residing in Palestine.

“I’ve had some trying times with my son, but it’s getting better,” Thornton said. “He’s working, he’s trying to get his life straightened back out.”

Thornton also said he hopes his son’s actions do not reflect on him.

“I hope people don’t find me guilty by association,” he said. “Every mom and dad goes through problems with their kids. We’ve raised four kids and three of our kids have never been in trouble with the law.”

Serving as mayor, Thornton added, puts his family’s issues in the spotlight.

“Since I’m the mayor, (my son’s story) gets put on the front page,” he said. “It’s the nature of the beast. I’ve worked hard being the mayor of Magnolia and I’m proud of the things I’ve done.”

Sounds like the Mayor is in denial about his son. Those parents that think their kids do no wrong - are doing more damage for their children than help. If the kid keeps getting into trouble @ 19, then I think a little intervention might help. He's obviously old enough to know better.

The mayor needs to get his head out of the sand. He has a ticking time bomb on his hands and until he admits it, there will be more issues. I suppose it was someone else's fault he robbed the store, too.
The apple doesn't fall.... oh you know!

He was "set up". Really? Someone "planted" the illegal knife in his truck and the dope "belongs to a friend"? COME ON!! Whether he pulled the knife or not is irrelevant. In Texas it is a crime to possess a knife with a blade length of over 5.5" so that explains why he was charged with POSSESSION of it, and not an a*sault. As for the dope, any first grader could come up with a better excuse. Mr. Mayor needs to keep his trap shut. Ever heard the old adage about better to be quiet and thought of as a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt? Give it arrest Jimmy, we all know that your son is a thug and no one necessarily blames his parents but your constant running to his rescue just makes matters worse.

I think the Mayor is trying hard to beleive in his son. He admits that he's had some difficulty with his son. What else do you want from him? He left him in jail the first time. As a parent you hope for the best, but you don't always get that. No matter what you teach your kids they still think they are 6 feet tall and bullet proof. You talk about intervention at 19, the kid is grown! and he was not accused of robbing the store but burgularizing it. There is a difference. I'm wondering what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty. This is still America right?

This is one dirty little area. Lots of corruption and unethical behavior. Our politians are the bottom dwellers for sure.

Politicans are a cesspool of liars, thieves, traitors, drunks, and other low level swine who, as individuals will do anything to enhance their lives, fortunes and power, all at the expense of the people, in order to be continually re-elected.

Is this the best you can do? What's any of this got to do with the mayors son being arrested?
This story should have past it's prime and been rotated out of the newspapers system, yet here it is. Where are the rest of the stories from April 6th?
And one last question, if all politicians are like you say, who would take everyone's place if you did manage to get rid of them?

It is so sad that the people who are so quick to write these comments are at such a loss. When I say loss I mean at a loss for getting to know the precious boy that is Corey and behaves far less worse than I did as a young girl and judge the politics accourdingly without cause. It is ignorance. I also may be at a loss myself to even write here because there is the saying to never be caught arguing with a fool because someone could be watching and become confused. I no doubt want to be confused as ignorant as some of the comments above. I do not live in your community but I do check the paper (online)and the comments.
I do have the profound privelage of knowing the whole family that the above comments reflect in a very laughable fashion and must say they are all beautiful people.
As for the corruption mentioned above I wouldn't know but as for the moral compa*s and the hearts and the direction and the beauty of the family I do. I am blessed in many aspects to know them and cheer Corey on for his leaps and bounds in personal growth. Thank goodness you people are not kin to others that would get you highlighted so quickly because I am pretty sure your soap box might fall through and then you would have all sorts of garbage to be said about yourself by other idiots!

At nineteen he is an adult and responsible for his own actions. But one would have to wonder, if the Mayor would would have taken care of issues when they occurred when he was younger or when he knew there was a problem his son might not be going through this.

The Mayor allowed his son to ride his four wheeler through out the subdivision knowing it was wrong. He also allowed him to tear up the swimming pool area without any consequences. Also numerous criminal mischief issues. But being the mayor or over the home owner a*sociation it makes it ok.

Councilmen Sanders know this he always complained to everyone how the Mayors son got away with everything. Grant it these things may have been small issues but going uncheck they turn into what the boy is going through now.

Rules and regulations are for everyone thats what keeps our society in check. When the rules and regulations are not followed you have the City of Magnolia.
