Tomball police to participate in warrant roundup

Tomball police officers will be out in force Feb. 25, as one of more than 200 law enforcement agencies participating in the 2012 Great Texas Warrant Roundup. The event will target people who have outstanding warrants in the state’s municipal courts.

Municipal court officials and Tomball police say that this is a much needed tool to clear the court’s books of outstanding warrants.

“We offered an amnesty before, which some defendants took advantage of and paid out their cases,” said TPD warrant officer and court bailiff Frank Mitchell. “Many others did not and, as a result, still have active cases that can cause them to be arrested.”

This is the sixth time Texas has held a statewide event. The event will also include officers from the Texas Attorney General’s office.

“The Texas Attorney General’s fugitive unit will be among more than 260 law enforcement agencies across the state that will participate,” Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said. “Before the round-up begins on Feb. 25, individuals who want to avoid being arrested for outstanding municipal or justice arrest warrants should contact local law enforcement.

Abbott said once the round-up begins that police will target offenders at their place of employment, school or their residences. Agencies are attempting to notify those with warrants, advising them to take care of them before Feb. 25, or face the prospect of an arrest.

“We are notifying defendants that there are numerous options available to assist them in quickly and conveniently taking care of their outstanding warrants without being arrested before Feb. 25th,” Mitchell said.

The cities of Houston, Galveston, Alvin, Angleton, Brenham, Bryan, Conroe, Danbury, Deer Park, Friendswood, Fulshear, Hempstead, Humble, Lago Vista, LaMarque, LaPorte, League City, Magnolia, Pearland, Prarie View, Southside Place, Sweeny and Webster are all taking part in the event, along with all Harris County justice courts.
