|
In a failing economy which has put many a city and municipality in financial risk, Magnolia has proved that it has the moxy to not only endure, but also profit.
City officials announced at an April 15 council meeting that the city made $52,340 in profit from its first Magnolia Music Festival. “We had a very, very successful first year,” Magnolia Mayor Jimmy Thornton said. “The festival was a huge hit. Everyone we spoke to seemed to have had a great time.” Shortly after announcing the city’s earnings, Thornton told the crowd about the city’s plans for the money. “From the profits we are going to give $15,000 back to the community,” he said. He went on to say that the city would seek out local non-profit “community support organizations” to be the beneficiaries of the city’s philanthropic endeavor. Thornton also announced that $25,000 of the funds were being put into an account for next year’s festival. “We are excited to have a head start on next year’s festival,” he said. “We plan on continuing this tradition.” The music festival was held March 20 through 22. Thornton said estimates put the number of festival goers over the three days at almost 6,000 with almost 3,500 in attendance to see Aaron Watson alone.
