Tomball students choose navy blue and silver, ‘Wildcats’ for new high school

Tomball ISD students have decided that navy blue is the new black. In a vote to decide the new color scheme and mascot for the upcoming Tomball Memorial High School, Willow Wood Junior High and Northpointe Intermediate students overwhelmingly opted for a navy blue/silver scheme.

According to Assistant Superintendent Huey Kinchen, 70 percent of Willow Wood and 65 percent of Northpointe students who voted chose the blue and silver scheme over two other color choices, which had been narrowed down from 21 original choices.

The vote on the school’s mascot, however, was decidedly closer. Sixth grade Northpointe students chose “Warriors” at a 48 percent rate. At Willow Wood, 48 percent also voted for “Wildcats,” resulting in a tie, Kinchen explained.

At a May 11 meeting of the Tomball ISD Board of Trustees, Kinchen said that after researching the meaning of the two names, an executive committee recommended “Wildcats” as the new mascot for Tomball Memorial High School.

The board approved both the color plan and the mascot the following night.

Tomball Memorial High School is scheduled to open in the fall of 2011.

“It was a great learning experience for our kids,” Kinchen said.

He said Tomball ISD administrators met with the students prior to the voting process to explain to them the importance of their choices. Administrators also sent a letter home with the students’ parents letting them know of the upcoming vote and to discuss the process and the importance with their children.
